Sony has announced Final Fantasy 16 for the PlayStation 5, revealing a lengthy first-look trailer.
The announcement was made at the PlayStation 5 Showcase event on Wednesday (September 16), ahead of the next-generation console's release at the end of the year.
The trailer teases a new fantasy setting for the RPG series, one where "the legacy of the crystals has shaped our history for long enough".
Players will come up against a mountain-sized Icon and what appears to be some sort of exploding fire demon man, as the franchise continues to get inventive with its monsters and enemies.
Despite its new setting, the game still features iconic figures from the game, including Chocobos and the Astral Shiva.
The game is developed by Square Enix, whose last entry in the series, Final Fantasy 15, was released in 2016 having been in the works for almost a decade.
Final Fantasy 16 will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 on the console front, but the game will also be available on PC, which is where the footage for today's trailer came from. Although it was clarified that the performance had been tailored to match the experience of the PS5.
The next information reveal for Final Fantasy 16 is scheduled for 2021.
During tonight's showcase, Sony also unveiled a first look at an RPG Harry Potter game, titled Hogwarts Legacy, which will seemingly allow players to create their own wizard and determine their destiny with every decision they make.
