Yahoo News Sony's Venom movie will channel classic horror masters
Sony are saying all the right things to get us excited for the upcoming Venom spin-off movie.
Talking to Variety, Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch has revealed that the movie, to be directed by Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer, will channel classic horror masters like John Carpenter and David Cronenberg.
With Venom centring around a reporter who bonds with an alien symbiote, Cronenberg sounds like a perfect influence given his love of body horror in films such as The Fly and Videodrome.
And really, you can't go wrong if you're being influenced by Carpenter – as long as it's his earlier work like Halloween or The Fog, mind.
"I've always been drawn to the more antihero superheroes. There's a dark element to [Venom] and a wit that has always appealed to me," Fleischer explained, adding that the movie will deal with Venom's origins.
"They become almost a third being, which is what Venom is. There's a famous quote: 'You're Eddie Brock. I'm the symbiote. Together we are Venom'."
Although Spider-Man: Homecoming was made with Marvel Studios, Marvel won't be involved in Venom or the other planned spin-off Silver & Black, and Sony's Amy Pascal recently clarified the movies' relation to the MCU.
"The other movies that Sony's going to make, in their relationship to this [MCU] Spider-Man, take place in this [separate Sony] world," she noted. "Although you're not going to see them in the Marvel Universe, it's in the same reality."
Last month, it was reported that Tom Hardy's Venom will be joined by the murderous Carnage in the spin-off.
Venom is released in cinemas on October 5, 2018.
