Grumpy or rude bus drivers may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a company’s new training programme.

First Bus has launched an initiative, which focuses on customer services and safety.

‘Better Journeys for Life’ is introduced this month and has already won a coveted City and Guilds accreditation – a UK first for the bus industry.

Improvements include a three days of customer services learning, 30 percent extra training time spent behind the wheel and adoption of the Smith System Advanced Safe Driving course.

They will also continue to ensure disabled passengers’ needs are catered for, by training drivers to help those in wheelchairs, with sight loss or dementia. The programme will be delivered to new and existing drivers.

First managing director Nigel Eggleton said: “Drivers play a vital role in attracting and retaining our customers. They are our ambassadors and therefore we must ensure they have the right and the best training.

“I’m delighted to launch First’s bespoke training programme, especially as it has secured the much sought after City and Guilds accreditation.”
