Sophie Ellis-Bextor praised the “inspirational” individuals who kept society going through the pandemic in a one-off live-streamed disco performance.

The singer teamed up with BT for the performance to celebrate the company’s newly announced winners of its campaign Unbreakables.

Fans were invited to nominate people who have entertained and motivated them during a unique and challenging year.

The winners included Kerry Irving, from Keswick, who used social media to livestream daily walks with his springer spaniels Max, Paddy and Harry, twice daily to keep people’s spirits up.

Laura Llewelyn Jones, from Pembrokeshire, who co-founded The West End of Wales Orchestra with her partner Iestyn, conducted virtual performances and educational sessions for her viewers.

Meanwhile, Chris Jowsey, from Balmaclellan, hosted an online pub quiz every week.

Ellis-Bextor performed a selection of her favourite tunes in dedication to the winners and shared special shout-outs to show her thanks for their commitment to helping others.

She said: “Tonight’s Unbreakable Disco was a real celebration of not only the individuals called out during the live-stream, but also the hundreds of inspirational nominations received, as part of BT’s search to recognise the everyday Unbreakables who kept us going during more difficult times.

“From online quizzes - to live stream dog walks, DJ sets and virtual workouts, tonight was a moment to honour the public who used the power of the internet to help people stay connected and motivated, in their own unique way.”
