Sophie Turner has allegedly taken Joe Jonas to court over their children
Sophie Turner is reportedly taking Joe Jonas to court over the custody of their two children.
Turner and Jonas announced earlier this month that they were ‘amicably divorcing’ after four years of marriage.
But now court documents allege that Jonas, 34, is refusing to hand over the passports of their two young daughters.
The documents claim that the family were planning to move to England, where Turner, 27, is originally from.
The pair were hoping their two children, Willa, who was born in 2020 and their second child, who was born last year but whose name has not been released to the public, were to be educated in the UK.
Turner also accused Jonas of ‘wrongful retention’ of their children. She claims her daughters were to stay with Jonas in the US while she filmed new movie, Joan, over in the UK.
According to the petition, Turner was expecting to return to the UK with the children after flying to New York in mid-September.
However, this was before the divorce was announced, which Turner claims happened ‘very suddenly’ and that she learned about it through media reports.
Jonas has disputed Turner’s claims, with legal representatives for the singer explaining the Florida court where the divorce was filed "restricts both parents from relocating the children" and that Turner was aware of that order.
In a lengthy statement, the reps added that Jonas and Turner had met in New York on Sunday. The cordial meeting led Jonas to believe they would "work together towards an amicable co-parenting set-up."
"Less than 24 hours later, Sophie advised that she wanted to take the children permanently to the UK," the statement reads. "Thereafter, she demanded via this filing that Joe hand over the children’s passports so she could take them out of the country immediately. If he complies, Joe will be in violation of the Florida court order."
His statement also condemned the use of language such as "abduction" calling it "misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst".
"The children were not abducted," the statement said. "Sophie is making this claim only to move the divorce proceedings to the UK and to remove the children from the US permanently.
"[Joe’s] wish is that Sophie reconsider her harsh legal position and move forward in a more constructive and private manner. His only concern is the well-being of his children."
