Activists gathered outside a number of H&M stores in South Africa on Saturday, January 13, after the clothing chain became embroiled in a racism controversy.

H&M’s use of a black child model for a hoodie with the phrase “coolest monkey in the jungle” attracted widespread criticism. The company withdrew the publicity image from its website and apologized.

As seen in these videos, people gathered a the Clearwater Mall in Johannesburg to sing and chant in protest, blocking access to the store. According to a journalist at the scene, police arrived to “monitor the situation” after reports of violence and damage at other stores. Credit: Twitter/Adolph_89 via Storyful
