Yahoo News South Park just did something it's never done before
South Park returned for a lengthier pandemic special episode last night (September 30), which stated that Stan's dad Randy Marsh is responsible for coronavirus (COVID-19), and featured the school's sole Black pupil being shot by police.
It was your typical South Park take on some of the year's biggest events, but the way it handled the political situation stood out from the norm.
Normally the show takes the stance that both sides of the political spectrum are equally bad, famously stating that it was 'Douche on one side and Turd on the other'. But the special ended with something new for the show: the characters breaking the fourth wall and directly telling the audience to go out and vote.
The show has done some soft fourth-wall leaning before, with the characters occasionally referring to the fact that they are characters in a TV show, but this is the first time they have done so so explicitly, and by making a plea to vote rather than their usual 'this all sucks' stance.
South Park recently made headlines over a promotional stunt in which they filled the Denver Broncos stadium full of cardboard cut-outs of the South Park residents (all wearing masks) to try and make it look like things are back to normal.
Last year it was announced that South Park had been renewed for a few more seasons, and the creators may also be working on more movies and specials.
South Park airs on Comedy Central, Netflix and NOW TV in the UK.
