Gareth Southgate 'not happy' despite England's thrashing of Panama

Gareth Southgate saw England score six goals in a record breaking afternoon – but says he wasn’t totally happy.

The Three Lions boss was delighted with most of what he saw from his side as they clinched victory over Panama to ease through to the second round.

But he knows there is room for improvement and offered a little reminder that standards can’t drop.

“Well I wasn’t happy with the start of the game or the end,” said the England manager.

“I was pleased with what came in between but there are parts of our game where we still have to get better.

“We had a 35 or 40-minute spell when we played very well. There were a lot of positives of course, and scoring six times in a World Cup match is incredible.

“John Stones scoring twice was one of those, as was Harry’s three goals. His hat-trick means he didn’t have the hump when I brought him off!

“It feels very good to be through with a game to spare. It’s a big achievement and we have real belief.”

Southgate says England are going all out to win the group – regardless of what it means in the next round.

If they do achieve their goal, they will play the team who finishes second in Group H – either Japan, Senegal, Columbia or Poland.

“We don’t know how important it is to finish top of the group yet,” he said. “But at half-time we said we need to keep scoring as we want to top the group not only tonight, but if we draw in the final game.

“We want to keep winning watches, we’re enjoying the feeling and we’re already looking forward to the next match.”
