Space Jam 2 is officially happening!

After years of stopping and starting, the ball is finally rolling on the long-awaited sequel to the 1997 comedy which teamed Looney Tunes stars with National Basketball Association (NBA) players.

The film will be led by LA Lakers star player LeBron James, whose production company SpringHill Entertainment has shared a first-look image, showing James' name in the locker room next to another mega-star, Bugs Bunny.

The image also revealed that Black Panther's Ryan Coogler has signed on as a producer, while Random Acts of Flyness creator Terence Nance will direct.

Speaking to the The Hollywood Reporter, James explained that he wanted Coogler involved in the project after seeing his work on Black Panther.

"I loved his vision," James said, adding that when he was growing up there were no black superheroes. "So for Ryan to be able to bring that to kids, it's amazing."

James went on to talk about why he wanted to make the sequel, explaining that he wanted to inspire kids not to give up on their dreams.

"The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie," James added.

"It's so much bigger. I'd just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don't just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people."

There's no release date for the film yet, however according to THR production is tentatively slated to begin in 2019, during the NBA off-season.
