Spain could replace France on the amber-plus list next week amid growing concerns of variants in the country.

Government sources are said to be increasingly confident that France will be upgraded off the list after it was added just over a week ago.

The news coincides with the country crossing its 40-million vaccine mark on Monday. But cases of the Delta variant are still rocketing–France recorded almost 23,000 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, twice as many as the previous week.

Despite this, sources told the Daily Mail that popular holiday destination, Spain, could be the one downgraded.

“The situation in Spain is beginning to feel a lot like the build-up to the decision on France.

“The Department of Health are getting very jumpy about the number of Beta cases in parts of the country. We’re not talking about the main tourist hotspots, but that might not make any difference – it didn’t with France,” they said.

Another source told the paper that France is “going to happen” and that “it should never have been left out in the first place”.

It comes as the Spain recorded 98 Covid related deaths on Monday, according to the latest figures from the Spanish Health Ministry. That is nearly double the 50 weekly fatalities reported last Monday and triple the 32 recorded two weeks ago.

Night curfews have been reintroduced in more than 30 towns in the Mediterranean region of Valencia, including in the city of Valencia and Benicassim in an attempt to combat the surge.

The news of a possible move could frustrate thousands of British holidaymakers that were set on travelling to the country during the summer break.

If the country is put onto the amber-plus list it means UK travellers would need to quarantine for 10 days upon return to the UK.
