Spanish Armed Police Swoop On UK 'Most Wanted'

A suspect on Britain's 'Most Wanted' list is being questioned over the torture and murder of another fugitive in Spain.

Paul Monk, 54, is being investigated over the killing of Francis Brennan, whose taped-up body was washed ashore near Alicante last year.

Brennan, 25, was on the run from the UK after being convicted of wounding and was kidnapped in the street by men disguised as Spanish police officers.

It is believed his murder was the result of a gangland feud over money.

Monk was held at his villa near Alicante as he supervised workmen laying a marble patio around his swimming pool.

Video released by the Spanish police shows armed police ordering him to lie down before he is secured and the rest of the villa is searched.

Police said they also found an imitation gun, a silencer and €125,000 (£90,000).

The video shows the bundles of cash being removed from what appeared to be a large plant pot or vase.

He was wanted by the UK's National Crime Agency on suspicion of drug trafficking, but will be held in Spain while detectives there investigate Brennan's murder.

A second British fugitive Jayson McDonald, 37, who was thought to be hiding in Spain was arrested the following day in Amsterdam.

Monk and McDonald were both featured last month in the latest NCA and Crimestoppers 10 Most Wanted list of suspects in Operation Captura .

Three of the 10 have now been arrested, bringing the total held in all appeals to 68 out of 86.

Dave Allen, head of the NCA's International Crime Bureau, said: "Our ability to capture two of our most wanted fugitives in different countries within 24 hours demonstrates the NCA's international reach."
