Spanish Officials Monitor Ongoing Eruptions at Cumbre Vieja Volcano

The Cumbre Vieja volcano has remained active, ejecting lava and ash onto the Spanish island of La Palma on Tuesday, October 19, a month after the initial eruptions began.

Footage from Spain’s Ministry of Defense show operations on October 18 amid ongoing eruptions on La Palma. Crews flew drones over the volcanic vents Monday to calculate the velocity and surface of lava flows, the ministry said.

The European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service, which uses satellite data to monitor both natural and man-made disasters, said 1,956 buildings had been destroyed due to lava flows across 811.8 hectares (about 3 square miles) as of Sunday, October 17.
