The makers of Bargain Hunt had to consult the series rule book, after Bez from the Happy Mondays was found to have swung an auction in their favour.

Bez and Mondays singer Rowetta went head-to-head with Jarvis Cocker and Pulp keyboardist Candida Doyle in the episode, which airs today to celebrate BBC Music Day.

But the rule break was discovered after filming, meaning that Bez and Rowetta won when they shouldn’t have.

The two teams were filmed trawling for bargains at an antiques fair in Kent.

But when it came to the auctioning of their finds, it later emerged that Bez’s girlfriend had bid for two items, a mirror and a record turntable.

In winning the items in the auction, it gave the Happy Mondays team an £8 advantage, and sealed their win.

However, Bargain Hunt rules state that friends and family of team-members are not allowed to assist.

Once the rule break came to light, the Pulp team was given the win, despite having lost £95 on their items at auction.

Bez also handed back the £8 profit, adding: “It was a genuine error. My girlfriend thought she was helping out.”

Show producer Paul Tucker told the BBC: “We have rules and regulations on Bargain Hunt and we have to make sure they abide by them.

“It was picked up by a runner and we verified there were clearly misdemeanours going on.

“It was a genuine rule that was broken and we had to reshoot the end. They are rock and rollers and they live on the edge as they did in the 80s.”

Erm, the 90s, surely?

“It’s not a surprise but in the end it was quite amusing,” he added.

The episode airs today at 12.15pm on BBC One.
