Spectacular Close-Up Footage Shows Mount Etna Spewing Lava in New Eruption

A local photographer captured stunning footage of Italy’s Mount Etna erupting on Thursday, February 18.

The footage, by Giuseppe Distefano, shows an up-close view of lava spewing from a crater and flowing down the volcano.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the volcano’s southeast crater first started pouring lava on Wednesday, February 17.

By Thursday, volcanic activity increased and lava fountains were reaching heights of up to 700 meters (more than 2,000 feet), the institute said. Credit: Giuseppe Distefano via Storyful
