Spectacular Video Shows Aurora Over New Zealand's Lake Mapourika

Stargazers across New Zealand watched the Southern Lights over the weekend of April 22-23. This video shows the spectacular Aurora Australis as seen from Lake Mapourika in Franz Joseph.

The aurora is not unusual in New Zealand, although it rarely shows itself on consecutive nights with the intensity seen in these videos. New Zealand media outlet Stuff.co.nz reported that ‘perfect’ weather conditions meant the lights were visible in many areas of the country, including Auckland and Christchurch, where they are less frequently seen.
