A speeding motorist was caught by police travelling at 140mph in Takeley on Saturday (January 4). Officers from Essex Police's Roads Policing Unit were conducting speed check on the A120 in Takeley at the weekend when they caught the speeding car.

Officers followed the driver and caught up with the car near to Stansted Airport. The force said the speeding car was held up by motorists who were observing the speed limit and "a little bit of luck due to traffic build-up".

Eagle-eyed officers also noticed the car had illegal tinted front windows when they spoke to the driver. The car was seized under anti-social driving legislation where the manner of driving is inconsiderate, careless or dangerous and puts other road users at risk.

The driver has been reported for speeding and dangerous condition of the car as the tinted windows fell below 30 per cent visibility. The stop is the latest in a number by police cracking down on dangerous driving, including a driver who was snatched travelling at 106mph on the M11.

Adam Pipe, Head of Roads Policing, said: “Speeding is totally unacceptable and speeds at this level are irresponsible – they could potentially result in a fatal collision. The higher the speed, the less time you have to react to the road conditions and other road users and there is a much shorter braking distance, all of which is covered in the Highway Code when you learn to drive. To ignore the speed limit, is to your detriment. It’s illegal and we will take action against any driver who doesn’t observe the limit."
