Spencer Matthews has admitted "proving a point" to his former self was one of the main things that got him through his gruelling 30-marathon challenge.

The Made In Chelsea star has just completed 30 marathons on sand over 30 consecutive days, raising more than £500,000 for small charities.

But he told The One Show that he had also been keen to prove to his former self, who struggled with drinking too much, that he had the confidence to achieve something amazing.

Spencer Matthews left those following his 30-marathon challenge in awe with his incredible achievement which drew to a close this week - but he admitted that the one person he really wanted to impress was his former self.

Matthews, who rose to fame as one of the original stars of Made In Chelsea, has spoken often about his previous struggles with alcohol and how he has turned to fitness challenges since giving up drinking.

Now the dad-of-three, who is married to Vogue Williams, has completed his most gruelling adventure yet - 30 marathons over 30 consecutive days in the desert, raising more than £500,000 for small charities through Make Some Noise.

Speaking to The One Show on Friday, he said: "It was a humbling experience and one I'll remember for the rest of my life. It was quite something."

Host Alex Scott asked him about his motivation to keep going in the tough conditions, where temperatures soared to over 40 degrees throughout the day, and Matthews spoke about the great work the charities he was supporting were doing in helping people affected by suicide, cancer or bereavement.

But he added: "There was a personal development element for me, I had a really turbulent relationship with alcohol for many years.

"Trying to prove a point to my former self that these things are achievable to me now that I've made better decisions with my life is very important to me. The former me would have no confidence in something like this. So for me, it marks a real landmark of development."

The Tower stars Gemma Whelan and Jimmy Akingbola also joined Friday's One Show to talk about the new series of the crime drama - but both shared the pinch-me moments they'd had landing roles in shows they were huge fans of.

Whelan, who has just completed filming for a role in sitcom The Cleaner alongside Greg Davies, said: "I was very desperate to be in The Cleaner in any capacity I could because I'm a huge fan of the show since day dot, so I asked my agent if there was any chance they could put my name in the mix and something came up in the shape of me. I got to work with (Davies) a few weeks ago."

Meanwhile, Akingbola spoke about being cast in the "iconic" role of butler Geoffrey for Bel-Air, the reimagined series of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

He said: "It was a dream come true, I grew up watching it like we all did. Tuesdays and Thursdays, singing along to the theme tune while you're eating."

The One Show airs on BBC One at 7pm on weekdays.
