I spent the afternoon in a hidden gem tavern in the heart of Newland Avenue

The hustle and bustle of Newland Avenue sees many Hull residents visit the wonderful bars and restaurants each week.

But you could be forgiven for missing this little tavern on the corner of Newland Avenue and Queens Road. Take a step inside though, and you'll be transported to a chilled-out bar offering a quiet corner to enjoy a beer or two.

Though small in size, Mr Moody's Tavern has a very large following of locals and an even bigger audience drawn into their Instagram famous Sunday roasts. In the area, I decided to see what it was like for myself.

The beauty of this pub is it instantly makes you feel at home. You're immediately greeted by authentic wooden flooring, stained glass windows and walls adorned with old black and white photos and memorabilia.

The tavern is probably one of the smaller watering holes in the Avenues but there's still ample space to enjoy. It has a handful of retro-style booths and a pair of bigger tables for larger groups, as well as party games for entertainment.

Their ever-changing beer selection is kept up to date with a menu on all the tables, so it was time for me to select my drink of choice for the night. I settled for the Laser Juice IPA, which was a good pastime drink while I soaked up the ambience.

It wasn't long before I was ready for drink number two. This time, I wanted to opt for the Wide Open Space - it would be rude not to try a few varieties while I was there, of course.

Noticing the change in drinks, the barmaid mentioned that this sour is way more spicy than the IPA I was nursing, and offered a taster before committing. I thought this was a nice attention to detail and I settled on a smaller half pint.

As I enjoyed my second drink, one of the screens showcasing their many beers showed their famous Russ' Roast dinners on a Sunday. Equipped with a kitchen, the place regularly hosts pop-up kitchen take-over food nights throughout the week too.

With a regularly changing menu, they've even had to create a separate Instagram account with well over 1,500 followers. I'll be adding it to my list to try.

Onto my third and last tipple, I headed to the bar one last time for a stout. I got speaking to a customer and business owner down the Avenues who pointed to the London Black and described it as better than Guinness. While the beer was settling, we discussed how popular dark beers have gotten, especially for people my age.

Mr Moody's definitely gives off a more relaxed offering than some other parts of the Avenues, which I'm a fan of. The booths are perfectly designed for face-to-face chatting, exactly how a pub should be.

Mr Moody's Tavern is open Tuesday - Friday 4pm - 11pm, Saturday 3pm - 11 pm and Sunday noon - 8pm.
