Los Angeles police are investigating allegations that Spice Girls star Mel B tampered with a witness in her on-going divorce battle.

A spokesperson for the LAPD has confirmed to E! News that the department has been alerted to claims that the singer - real name Melanie Janine Brown - sent intimidating text messages to rapper Siya.

Siya was reportedly preparing to testify as a counter to Mel B's allegations that ex-husband Stephen Belafonte was emotionally and physically abusive during their marriage, for which Mel was granted a temporary restraining order against him and their former nanny Lorraine Gilles earlier this year.

Digital Spy has reached out to Mel B's legal representatives for a response to this Los Angeles police investigation. Siya's spokesperson has declined to speak to the press thus far.

Mel B originally filed for divorce from Stephen Belafonte back in March after nearly ten years of marriage. Ever since, the two have been locked in a custody dispute over their 5-year-old daughter Madison.

When the popstar and America's Got Talent judge first secured a temporary restraining order against her former partner this past spring, Belafonte's lawyers issued a full denial of her accusations of abuse.

Their statement read: "It's a shame that Ms Brown elected not to proceed in a respectful and amicable fashion in this very private matter. In due course, Mr Belafonte will be filing his response to the outrageous and unfounded allegations made by Ms Brown, which allegations he vehemently denies.

"When the Court determines the truth, it will become clear that this entire charade was nothing more than a smear campaign intended to cover up Ms Brown's own conduct during the marriage in light of her current involvement with a family television show, and in an effort to unfairly gain leverage both financially and with respect to custody of the children.

"When the degree to which Ms Brown has gone to create a false depiction of her marriage to Mr Belafonte is uncovered, real victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse will be understandably offended, angry and upset.

"Mr Belafonte is confident that the truth will come out when he has his day in court at which time he looks forward to being reunited with his children.

"What matters most to Mr Belafonte is the safety and wellbeing of his daughters and step-daughters."

Belafonte and Mel B married in a private Las Vegas ceremony in June 2007.
