Yahoo News Spider-Man is becoming the most important MCU character
Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel are on the way, and promising to bring big changes to Marvel's cinematic universe as Phase 3 comes to an end.
And while the rumour is that major stars like Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans could be leaving the MCU, Marvel Studios president has said that Tom Holland's Spider-Man will become one of the most important characters in Phase 4.
"So much happens in [Avengers 3 and 4], as you can imagine, and so much is affected by it that we felt what better person to hold your hand and lead you into the next incarnation of the MCU, in a grounded, realistic manner, than Peter Parker?" Kevin Feige told io9.
"So, coming out two months after Untitled Avengers, [that's what] much of what the next Spider-Man film will be about.
"It was purposefully done like this. Like how the events of Captain America: Civil War impacted Peter as he was dropped off by Tony and expected to go back to continue his sophomore year, how the hell are the events of Infinity War and Untitled [Avengers] going to affect him as he, yes, goes back to his junior year?"
2019's Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is the only film Marvel has confirmed for its post-Avengers 4 Phase 4, and it looks like that will remain the case for a couple of years now.
"I hope [the news comes] after that," said Feige. "I think there will be certain elements that start to come about, not the least of which is the already announced release date of the next Spider-Man film.
"But other than that we're going to keep it very close to the vest because this is really about focusing on the unprecedented conclusion to a 22-movie overarching narrative."
Feige has also said that Avengers 4 will mark the final chapter for some MCU heroes.
Avengers: Infinity War will be released in the UK on April 27, 2018, and in the US on May 4, 2018. Its untitled sequel will follow on April 26, 2019, in the UK and May 3, 2019, in the US.
The untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will kick off the MCU's Phase 4 in July 2019.
