Yahoo News Spider-Man stalls at box office while fighting off Apes
It looks like Spider-Man: Homecoming isn't going to enjoy quite the success in cinemas that Marvel would have hoped for, as the film is starting to falter in the box office, while War for the Planet of the Apes has conquered the Spidey flick in its first weekend.
Homecoming was made to a pretty hefty budget of $175 million, and in its second weekend of release has managed to clock up $45.2m, meaning its total box office income currently stands at $208.27m in ten days. Not bad, you might think.
What will concern the big wigs, though, is that those figures represent a 61% drop in its second weekend, which, interestingly is exactly the same second-weekend sales falls that befell Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Meanwhile, War for the Planet of the Apes has come out on top in its weekend debut with the cinema-going punters, making $56.5 million at the US box office, joined with positive reviews that suggest the movie might keep on making money.
"First and foremost the movie came in right where we expected it to," said Fox's distribution chief Chris Aronson (via Variety), who suggested that a "soft" next few weeks could give War for the Planet of the Apes a long and healthy run in cinemas. "We're going to play for quite some time," he said.
