Spitting Image has released the first official trailer for the rebooted series – featuring the likes of Kim Kardashian, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson taking bribes to promote the show.
The spoof comedy show, an award-winning hit in the 1980s, is returning on streaming service BritBox later this year, and it appears any famous figure is at risk of being sent up.
Describing itself as “a show that makes fun of celebrities but is also endorsed by celebrities”, it features puppets of The Rock, Kardashian, Sheeran (with a head like a turnip), Eilish and The Pope accepting wads of cash to say how much they love it.
Proudly announcing it as “a show that dares to take cheap shots”, it features Gwyneth Paltrow declaring: “If you liked my vagina candle, you’ll love my anus oil.”
And a United Nations summit shows Kanye West declaring himself “Ruler of Earth” before throwing sneakers at the heads of world leaders.
But as well as taking swipes at A-List stars, the show has not lost its political angle.
Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg is shown mugging someone from their mobile phone and laughing, “Got all your private data!” Amazon boss Jeff Bezos then steals his wallet and cackles, “But I’ve got all your money!”
Shamed Royal Family member Prince Andrew is shown being beaten over the head with a plank of wood.
In reference to the coronavirus pandemic, the trailer opens with a movie trailer style voice over announcing: “In a time of terror, when creatures of night command vast riotous armies, a hero rises from slumber to once again do battle.”
Boris Johnson is shown in the Oval Office trying to explain to Donald Trump what Spitting Image is.
Trump is baffled but insists, “My puppet is going to be the best puppet and I love it.”
The British prime minister and the US president are then show sitting naked in a sauna eating fried chicken insisting: “How are the going to make us look stupid? Can’t be done.”
They are interrupted by Russian president Vladimir Putin who enters and attacks them with his penis.
The trailer ends: “Watch Spitting Image because there’s something funny about these people.”
The original Spitting Image ran from 1984 to 1996 on ITV and featured puppets of everyone from the Queen Mother to Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.
At its peak, it was watched by an audience of 15 million viewers.
Spitting Image is produced by Avalon, whose credits include The Russell Howard Hour, Taskmaster, Catastrophe and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.
Spitting Image will air on BritBox on Saturday October 3.
