The release date for upcoming team shooter Splatoon 2 was announced during last night's Nintendo Direct stream.
The splatting sequel will arrive on July 21, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
The Direct stream also revealed a new game mode for Splatoon 2: Salmon Run. Here players must fight hordes of filthy-looking salmon in order to collect, and then bank, their golden eggs.
Salmon Run is a co-op mode, which could make an enjoyable change of pace from the game's other competitive offerings.
The video also suggests that Salmon Run will grant players special rewards for playing.
Nintendo also announced three brand-new Splatoon 2 series amiibo: Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, and Inkling Squid.
Tapping these amiibo to your Switch will allow you to "befriend them". It's then possible to change the character's outfit and other customisations. These options are stored on the amiibo and can be easily taken to another Switch, tapped, and imported.
Splatoon 2 doesn't look all that different from the original game, but is a natural fit for the Switch hardware. The game's competitive modes like Turf Wars may prove ideal for the console's eight-person local multiplayer capability.
We'll be reviewing Splatoon 2 the moment it slides above water. Watch this space.
