The Split star Nicola Walker has teased a more "vulnerable" Hannah Defoe in the forthcoming special.
Two years on, Abi Morgan's popular drama returns to screens this weekend in two new episodes titled The Split: Barcelona, seeing the Defoes heading to sunny Spain for a family wedding.
Love is in the air, but that doesn't exclusively apply to the bride and groom, with new cast addition Toby Stephens teased as a potential love interest for Hannah in the official trailer.
In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, the Unforgiven actor reveals how the romantic opportunity impacts her character and why it's so powerful.

"I think what is great about these two episodes, is these two grown up people being incredibly vulnerable," she told us. "Hannah being incredibly vulnerable, to speak about how she feels, which I don’t think I've seen very often, if ever.
"She's a woman at a certain point in her life saying this is absolutely terrifying and I’m afraid," she continues. "We don’t often present that in primetime TV dramas."
The season 3 finale saw Hannah content and confident in herself following her divorce from Nathan (Stephen Mangan), with it clear that she doesn't need a significant other in order to be happy - a deliberate message from show writer Morgan.

"I guess we had the thing of two years on, what do we want for Hannah?" she said of where we find the character in the new two-part special. "We show Hannah as someone who has really got on with her life and she’s found her independence, she’s gone on a very different direction to Nathan.
"So we thought, what does it mean to be free? And to be an empty nester and to be someone who is still very in control of their career but suddenly finds themselves no longer time pressured by her children? And so she gets time for herself."
Morgan found it "very enjoyable" to write Hannah opening her heart up to romance again.
"The whole point of the show is exploring these women who are very fun and finding themselves alongside finding love, and it just felt like a really fun thing to do," she told Digital Spy. "To just explore what would romance look like for Hannah in her fifties."
"She still has her success and her career but also those vulnerabilities and those tender spots that we all have, and it was a chance to play both sides of Hannah again."
The Split: Barcelona is set to premiere on BBC One on December 29 and 30 at 9pm, and iPlayer on December 29.
