Geraint Thomas wins Sports Personality of the Year 2018 ahead of Harry Kane and Lewis Hamilton

Geraint Thomas has won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2018 award.

The Tour de France winner beat off strong competition from bookmakers favourite Harry Kane and five-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton.

The 32-year-old is the fourth cyclist since 2008 to win the award, following in the footsteps of Sir Chris Hoy, Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins.

The Welshman was nominated along with Kane, Hamilton, athlete Dina Asher-Smith, skeleton racer Lizzy Yarnold and cricketer Jimmy Anderson.

Gareth Southgate was unanimously chosen by the BBC SPOTY panel as the winner of the Coach of the Year award after leading England to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia.

England Women's Netball team were named as the Team of the Year for their last-gasp 52-51 victory over Australia which helped them win gold at the Commonwealth Games.

They also picked up the Moment of the Year award after securing victory with just seconds to go.

There were special Lifetime Achievement and Helen Rollason awards handed out to Billie Jean King and Billy Monger respectively.
