Spotify 'block' feature means users will be able to mute R Kelly

Spotify is preparing to introduce a new feature that will allow users to block or mute artists they don’t want to hear from.

According to The Verge, the streaming platform is currently testing a “don’t play this artist” feature on its latest iOS app, which lets you simply block an entire artist from playing, so songs from that artist will not play from a library, playlist, chart list or radio station on Spotify.

Spotify originally decided not to include a blocking feature after “serious consideration” in 2017, however it has now reversed that decision.

It it likely linked to the fact that Spotify has come under considerable pressure to offer such a feature, after a #MuteRKelly protest and recent documentary helped bring attention to the multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against him. Kelly denies all of the allegations.

Kelly’s label RCA has reportedly now dropped him from its label. Spotify removed him from its curated playlists last year, along with several other controversial artists. However it dropped its “hateful conduct” policy after backlash at how “vague” the criteria for removing an artist was.

The Independent has contacted Spotify to find out when it plans to roll out the feature to wider use.
