'Spree' exclusive clip: Stranger Things' Joe Keery is a dangerous social media wannabe

In Netflix’s cult 80s sci-fi show Stranger Things Joe Keery plays the dorky and loveable, bequiffed teenager Steve Harrington. His new film, the dark social media satire Spree – in UK cinemas 14 August – is as far from Steve as possible: He’s ditched the quiff and the charm to play the film’s murderous anti-hero Kurt Kunkle.

We’re thrilled to share a brand new clip from the Vertigo Releasing film, which you can watch in full above.

It shows Kurt at the start of the film. He’s a desperate social media wannabe who thinks you don’t exist unless you’re sharing your life online. However, he lacks something essential for influencers: followers.

The clip shows the down on his luck ride share driver devising a plan to go viral, by whatever means possible, even if it has deadly consequences for his ride passengers.

Here’s a synopsis: 23-year-old Kurt Kunkle plans to livestream a rampage, as a shortcut to infamy. Coining his evil scheme "#thelesson" he installs a set of cameras in his car and begins streaming his rides. Kurt picks up passengers, only to dispense with them for the pleasure of his viewers... oh wait, he doesn't have any!

Wildly miscalculating the presumed popularity that would come from his lethal scheme, Kurt desperately ups the stakes and tries to make sure his horrific non-event transforms into a viral sensation. In the middle of all this madness, Jessie Adams, a stand-up comedian with her own viral agenda, crosses Kurt's path and becomes our only hope to put a stop to his misguided carnage.

Starring Joe Keery (Stranger Things) and Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live) with David Arquette and Mischa Barton, and directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko (Wobble Palace), Spree comes to UK cinemas on 14 August.
