Mechanics who worked for three hours to free this cat from the middle of a powerful suspension spring say they are still trying to work out how the animal ended up getting wedged inside.

Driver Vitaliy Bouranin said he had not noticed anything when he had climbed into his Toyota Land Cruiser to set off on a business journey in Sakhalin, near southeast Russia.

Bouranin, 32, had travelled about 50 miles, when he stopped for petrol at a service station.

He said: 'As I was filling up, I heard a noise that sounded like a cat meowing. I thought it might be under the car so when I put the fuel nozzle back, I had a look and couldn't see it, but I could still hear it.

'After a little poking around, I finally saw a patch of fur and realised the cat had somehow ended up inside the spring.

'I have no idea how long it was there or more importantly, how it got there. I would have said it was impossible for a cat to get in the middle of a spring like that but somehow it had managed it.'

After enlisting the help of garage staff and failing to remove the pet, police and firemen were called to the scene and decided the only thing to do was dismantle the car and remove the suspension spring.

The cat, seemingly undisturbed at its ordeal, waited patiently as the spring was removed, and only then could it be freed.

It was then put in a box so it could be eventually taken back to where it had boarded the car, in Vitaliy's hometown, and where police are hoping to find its owner.
