After months of speculation, countdowns, and a pushed back release date, the new and improved Spyro the Dragon will be making its way to your Xbox and PlayStation 4 today.

Developers Toys for Bob have been working hard over the past few months to recreate the iconic game and reboot it for the next generation of consoles.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new Spyro Reignited Trilogy and how to buy it.

What is the Spyro Reignited Trilogy?

The original Spyro the Dragon trilogy was released on PlayStation One in 1998.

As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, earlier this year Activision revealed it was going to be releasing an upgraded Spyro the Dragon and the classic trilogy for fans.

Activision said: “Spyro has been unleashed. He’s all scaled up and ready to flare up some bad games.”

Named Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, it includes the three original games: Spyro the Dragon, Ripto’s Rage! and Year of the Dragon, in a new and improved format.

Developers Toys for Bob has had to rebuild the games from scratch, as well as adding new assets, lighting, animations and cinematics.

Fans were extremely excited about the announcement, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts, and some criticisms, about the new games.

It’s going to be a big game when it arrives: PushSquare are reporting that the whole game will take up 67.5GB on a PS4, so make sure to start clearing some space.

When is Spyro Reignited released?

The new game was slated to be released on September 21 but back in August, Toys for Bob revealed it was pushing the release date back to November 13.

In a statement by the studio’s co-head, Paul Yan, he explained that the studio was really proud to be reignited the trilogy but that the team needed more time.

“I really hoped that you would be rescuing dragons and scorching Rhynocs sooner, but the Trilogy needs more love and care. In November when you’re exploring the Dragon Realms, Avalar and the Forgotten Worlds, we know you’ll agree the extra time was worth the wait,” said Yan.

Finally, the wait is over as the new Spyro Reignited games will be arriving at your homes from today.

Where to buy Spyro Reignited for PS4 and Xbox

If you’re looking to buy your own version of Spyro Reignited for PS4 or Xbox, then you can find it at all gaming sites on the internet.

Amazon is selling the new game for £29.99 on both PS4 and Xbox, as well as GAME, and Argos.

What about Spyro Reignited for Nintendo Switch?

If you own a Nintendo Switch and want to play Spyro Reignited, you’re going to be disappointed.

Fans were convinced the game would arrive on the Switch, particularly after there was an appearance of a Switch listing on the official Spyro site, but unfortunately there is no Spyro on the Switch at the moment.

Activision told Nintendolife: “We're excited that even more Spyro fans will have the opportunity to experience the franchise on PS4 and XB1 platforms. We do not have any other platforms to announce at this time.”

The reboot of Crash Bandicoot did make its way to the Switch in the end so there’s no need to give up hope. It seems unlikely that it will arrive this year though.

Spyro Reignited reviews are in

If you’re not convinced yet that you need Spyro Reignited in your life then the reviews just might. The Spyro Reignited reviews have just started to come in and they’re looking pretty great.

IGN said: “Toys for Bob has done a great job of filling Spyro’s first three adventures with such reinvigorated life.”

Eurogamer said: “Thanks to its charming redesign and smooth controls, exploring Spyro's world is a rather magical experience for returning players, while its soft and welcoming aesthetics could make this a hit with a new generation of youngsters.”
