St Helens make call on Waqa Blake's future with contract decision confirmed
St Helens have confirmed the departure of Waqa Blake after one season with the club. The Super League club have decided against extending his contract, having initially joined the club on a one-year contract.
The Fijian has endured an inconsistent season, making some high profile mistakes in a campaign in which he scored eleven tries in 24 appearances for Paul Wellens' side. However, Blake was left out of the squad for the final rounds of the season, which appeared to be the writing on the wall with regards to his future.
That has now proven to be the case, with the club confirming Blake as one of seven players who will leave at the end of the year.
The departures of other senior players had already been confirmed. Tommy Makinson is heading to Catalans Dragons, Lewis Dodd has signed for South Sydney Rabbitohs while Sione Mata'utia is returning to Australia with his family. Also leaving the club are Sam Royle, Ben Lane and McKenzie Buckley.
Blake's future now appears unclear. He didn't land an NRL gig last season, which saw him make a short-term move to Saints for the 2024 season. a deal that represented an ideal outcome for both the club and the player.
But after struggling to impress, Saints will now head in a different direction. Saints are now back to having seven quota players for 2025, with Tristan Sailor and Kyle Feldt both joining the club next season. That said, the club has yet to confirm what the future holds for Konrad Hurrell, and should he depart, the club will have another overseas spot available to use.
