Stabbed Train Hero Awake And 'In Good Spirits'

The US airman who helped foil a terror attack in France is "in good spirits" and able to get out of bed after being repeatedly stabbed in a fight earlier this week.

In a hospital statement, doctors upgraded his condition from serious to fair and said his vital signs were stable and normal.

Initial reports on Thursday claimed Mr Stone would not survive his injuries.

Spencer Stone was stabbed three times in a night-time brawl with three men in Sacramento, California.

He reportedly knocked out one of them after he was stabbed , according to a taxi driver who spoke to local media.

No arrests have been made but police say they are "working round the clock" on the case and are urging more witnesses to come forward.

"It would be way too premature to discuss what witnesses saw," said Sacramento Police sergeant Doug Morse.

Officers have interviewed a 24-year-old woman who was one of four people with Mr Stone and received minor injuries in the fight - apparently after trying to protect him.

CCTV of the fight shows the airman taking on his attackers in the street, while another clip appears to show a woman not in his group fleeing with two men in a car.

Sacramento Deputy Police Chief Ken Bernard has said they are looking for two Asian men in their 20s who left the scene in a dark Toyota Camry.

People in the Badlands club applauded 23-year-old Mr Stone earlier in the night, according to owner TJ Bruce.

Club employees said they did not see any confrontation inside the club or directly outside - but police believe the fight was related to a "nightclub incident".

Officers also say there is no evidence the attackers knew who Mr Stone was.

In August, Mr Stone and friends Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler subdued a heavily-armed gunman on a train from Amsterdam to Paris.

Mr Stone suffered a badly cut thumb and a wound to his neck after he was attacked with a box cutter during the struggle.

President Barack Obama met the three Americans last month and they were all awarded France's highest honour.

Mr Skarlatos, an Army National Guard Specialist, described Mr Stone as "one tough guy" after learning of the stabbing.
