The Hereditary actress will appear in the HBO Max limited series opposite Colin Firth as Michael Peterson, who was convicted of murdering his wife before the conviction was changed to voluntary manslaughter.
Kathleen is described as a corporate executive, mother and stepmother of five, while the series itself will explore Michael's life, his sprawling family and Kathleen's suspicious death.
The original documentary series was released in 2004, with an update in 2013 before Netflix added a few more episodes in 2018.
The Staircase's new scripted drama will be executive produced by American Crime Story's Maggie Cohn alongside Christine's Antonio Campos, who will direct six of the series' eight episodes.
"This has been a project I have been working on in one way or another since 2008," Campos said. "It's been a long and winding road, but well worth the wait to be able to find partners like HBO Max, Annapurna, co-showrunner Maggie Cohn and the incredible Colin Firth to dramatise such a complex true-life story."
