In 2009 we saw the Star Trek movies rescued from the scrapheap thanks a reboot that felt modern and fresh, but less than a decade later it seems that things have unravelled.

Star Trek Beyond, which came out in 2016, was the lowest grossing film in the rebooted series, and since then it looks like Chris Pine won't return as Captain Kirk. Potential directors have been attached and then stepped away and there were recent reports that the whole thing has been "shelved".

But Sulu actor John Cho is confident it will happen, as he told ETOnline: "To be honest, I mean it’s not happening right now as far as I know, but I just think it will happen. Somebody at some point will all get on the same page and we’ll do it.

"To me it's just sort of a really significant part of American popular culture. I just don’t see how it goes away forever."

To be fair, it's not like there is a dearth of Star Trek content at the moment. The TV series Star Trek: Discovery is soon to return for a second season, there are online shorts, another animated series being planned and they've got Sir Patrick Stewart to return as Captain Jean-Luc Picard for his own series.

And there's also a planned movie that won't feature the cast of the last three films, and is to be directed be Quentin Tarantino.
