Star Trek: Discovery is still a few months away, but details of the general plot are starting to be released.

The revival series is said to have plenty of plot twists that would be ruined if revealed now (looking at you, Doctor Who), but Entertainment Weekly has managed to get a few details out of showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J Berg.

Main character Michael Burnham, played by The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green, has spent "a lot of time on Vulcan, but she's human", says Harberts.

"Sarek (Spock's father) plays an important role in her life, which has been completely planned until she makes a very difficult choice that sends her life on a very different path.

"When we meet her, she's the First Officer on the Starship Shenzhou, and Burnham's choice that we're alluding to is the most difficult choice you can make: it affects her, affects Starfleet, affects the Federation, it affects the entire universe.

"That choice leads her to a different ship, the Discovery, and there we begin what Gretchen and I call our 'second pilot'."

Discovery is shaking up the Star Trek formula: Burnham isn't the captain even though she's the main character. In her place are two captains: Jason Isaacs' character aboard the Discovery, and Michelle Yeoh's on the Shenzhou. Two ships for the price of one.

It's not all new, though, the Klingons will be returning and, as the publication reports, they will have a big antagonistic impact on the series.
