It's brought us audio plays based on Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Prisoner, Captain Scarlet and many more cult series. And now, Big Finish is boldly going into the Star Trek universe.

Announced today (July 4) is Star Trek: Prometheus, a new trilogy of audiobooks based on the 2016 novel series.

Originally published in Germany in 2016 to mark Trek's 50th anniversary, the Prometheus trilogy – charting the adventures of Captain Richard Adams and the crew of the USS Prometheus – has been translated into English for the first time for the new audiobooks.

Alec Newman, who played Malik in Star Trek: Enterprise, serves as narrator on the three releases: out today are Volume 1: Fire with Fire and Volume 2: The Root of All Rage, with Volume 3: In the Heart of Chaos scheduled for release in December.

The official synopsis for Star Trek: Prometheus reads: "The Federation races to discover the culprits of several terrorist attacks, sending their flagship, the USS Prometheus, to stop war breaking out in the galaxy.

"A mysterious terrorist organisation has carried out several attacks against the Federation and Klingon Empire. Tensions are running high in a region already crippled by conflict. The perpetrators are tracked to the Lembatta Cluster, a mysterious region of space whose inhabitants, the Renao, regard the Alpha Quadrant s powers as little more than conquering tyrants.

"The Federation are desperate to prevent more bloodshed, and have sent their most powerful warship, the USS Prometheus, into the Cluster to investigate the threat before all-consuming war breaks out."

These audiobooks, written by Bernd Perplies and Christian Humberg and released in association with Bastei Lubbe, are available from bigfinish.com at £9.99 each, or as a bundle for £24.99.
