Season 3 may not be the end of Star Trek: Picard as star Patrick Stewart hasn't ruled out a possible return in the role.

The third instalment, which recently aired its finale, marked the culmination of that story, but it seems that the door is open on potential spin-offs. If this is the case, the X-Men actor wouldn't miss on the chance to reappear as the USS Enterprise captain.

After both executive producer Terry Matalas and You's Ed Speleers, who plays Jack Crusher on Picard, expressed interest in continuing in some capacity, Stewart said he would be "happy" to return if the planets align.

"Yes. The circumstances, as it was with Picard, would be the important factor in all of that," he told Variety.

"But certainly, there is a wonderful future for Ed there, I'm sure of it. And if I can occasionally crop up to offer a little bit of comedy myself, then I shall be happy to do that."

This isn't the first time Stewart has addressed the possibility of playing Picard once again, a role he first portrayed in series Star Trek: The Next Generation, which originally ran between 1987 and 1994.

Ahead of season 3 premiering in February this year, the actor said there was still "enormous potential" for a new chapter.

"There is still enormous potential for matters in what we can do and there are doors left open and we didn't close all of them," Stewart explained (via Deadline).

And while a fourth season of Picard isn't likely to be happening now, there's still hope that Stewart and some of the cast would jump through one of those open doors to tell more space adventures.

Star Trek: Picard airs on Paramount+, and UK viewers can also see the show on Prime Video.
