The Star Trek universe isn't exactly known for being sweary, though that could all be about to change with Quentin Tarantino's take on the franchise.

The director confirmed in the past week that his long-rumoured project will be R-rated (to the shock of no-one), which got some Trekkies a little hot under the collar.

After all, one of Tarantino's movie trademarks is a barrage of swearing and violence, though former Star Trek star William Shatner has now defended the idea against any doubters.

"Why are people plotzing about this? It's my understanding that Star Trek Discovery has used expletives in some episodes," the James T Kirk star pointed out on Twitter. "Why aren't people melting down over that?"

As mentioned, Discovery has contained profanities before – notably the use of the f-word – so it wouldn't exactly be a first for the Star Trek universe.

Of course, we don't know much more about Tarantino's vision for the Star Trek universe other than a script existing.

"There's a script that exists for it now," he said previously while chatting to /Film. "I need to weigh in on it, but I haven't been able to do that yet."

One person that does know something is Star Trek actor Karl Urban, who said last year: "I know a little bit about what that is, and it's bananas."

He added of Tarantino: "Whether you like his films or not, he is a good filmmaker. And he makes interesting stuff. So, to me, that is when you get the best results."
