After months of referring to Ron Howard’s Star Wars film as the “as-of-yet-untitled Han Solo spin-off”, the director has finally confirmed a title – with a little help from Chewbacca.

The upcoming film, starring Alden Ehrenreich as the titular character, will be called Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Howard broke the news in a “special” Instagram video in which he praised his “incredibly talented cast”.

He said: “Hi, well as we wrap up production I want to take this moment to thank an incredibly talented cast and crew for all their hard work.

Ok, so here's a special message as we wrap production! #starwars

“To the fans out there I hope you enjoy the pictures I’ve been sharing, pictures I’ve been taking from the set of… can we even say the name of the movie?”

Chewbacca then hands Howard a black board which he turns over to reveal the title, before telling fans: “I’ll see you next year.”

Fans were predictably ecstatic, with one claiming they had been left with “goosebumps” while others begged him to release a trailer.

One commented: “Omg omg omg omg! Goose bumps! Congratulations.”

Another wrote: “Howard, you've done it again!”

A third posted: “Ayeeee now I'm waiting for the trailer.”

Howard took over the production after original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller stepped down in June over “creative differences” arose between themselves and executive producer Kathleen Kennedy.

The Apollo 13 director kept fans up-to-date with throughout the shoot with pictures of elaborate sets and the cast in action.

Names including Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Woody Harrelson star.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is slated for UK cinema release on May 25, 2018.
