It's official: filming has wrapped on Star Wars Episode IX.

Director JJ Abrams has marked the special occasion with a touching post on Twitter, alongside a new photograph of stars Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac and John Boyega hugging it out.

"It feels impossible," he writes. "But today wrapped photography on Episode IX. There is no adequate way to thank this truly magical crew and cast. I’m forever indebted to you all."

Looking at the picture it looks like our heroes are back in the deserts of Jakku, or maybe they've jetted off to Tattooine for a spot of podracing.

With filming wrapped, we are only getting even more eager for the release of that first trailer, or even the reveal of the film's title. Actor Anthony Daniels tweeted something about it last week and all it did was make us more confused than ever.

Episode IX, or whatever it is going to be called, will wrap up the Star Wars sequel trilogy, possibly ending the Skywalker Saga once and for all. Disney have plenty more in the pipeline though, from The Mandalorian, a Cassian Andor series, a Rian Johnson-helmed trilogy, a series from the Game of Thrones showrunners and potentially some more anthology films.

Star Wars Episode IX will be released in cinemas on December 19 in the United Kingdom, and December 20 in the United States.
