Yet another Star Wars trilogy appears to be in the works at Lucasfilm - this one based on one of the franchise's most beloved spinoffs.

It was reported by Buzzfeed News late Thursday (May 23) that James Cameron's Avatar executive producer and Alita: Battle Angel co-writer Laeta Kalogridis is finishing up the first script for a planned film trilogy based on the classic video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The 2003 roleplaying game was set some 4,000 years before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, at a time when the Sith were in open conflict against the Jedi.

Players were tasked with stopping the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Malak, from toppling the Republican with his fleet of acolytes. Through their travels, players would encounter Wookiees, droids and revered female Jedi Knight Bastila Shan.

Should the project move forward, Laeta Kalogridis would be the franchise's first female writer for a feature script since Leigh Brackett was credited on The Empire Strikes Back. Carrie Fisher also did script work for George Lucas over the years, but was uncredited.

Neither Lucasfilm or Disney have commented on reports that a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic trilogy is in the works. However, there was some chatter a few weeks ago!

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy let slip during an interview with MTV News at Star Wars Celebration that she was revisiting the Knights of the Old Republic property.

"We talk about that all the time," she teased. "Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now, I have no idea where things might fall."

If this comes to pass, it would be the third trilogy that Kennedy currently has in the works. It was announced last week that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss will release the first film in their own new trilogy on December 16, 2022.

The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson also has his own trilogy in development, but those films are not yet on Disney's release calendar.

Next up for the franchise is Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, opening on December 19 in the UK and December 20 in the US.
