State of Emergency Declared After Deadly Storms Hit Alabama

At least six people were killed after severe weather tore through Alabama on Thursday, January 12, Gov Kay Ivey said.

Ivey declared a state of emergency for some of the worst hit counties, including Autauga, Chambers, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore and Tallapoosa.

This footage by Emily Segrest, who is based in Pratville, Autauga County, shows a rotating funnel cloud near her home.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said a “large and extremely dangerous tornado” tore through nearby Selma on Thursday.

Selma authorities said most streets in the city were closed due to downed power lines and trees, but said all schools had reported that students were unharmed. Credit: Emily Segrest via Storyful
