State pensioners in 18 UK postcodes are set to be handed a free £25 cash payment in the form of the Cold Weather Payment. The Cold Weather Payment scheme will run until March 31, 2025 and you'll get a payment if the average temperature where you live hits zero degrees or below over seven consecutive days.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) scheme, which runs until March 31, 2025, has been activated for postcodes including CA9-12, CA16-17 in Carlisle and NE19, NE47-49 in Newcastle upon Tyne. A full list of the first 18 postcodes eligible for a single cold weather payment worth £25 shows Carlisle: CA9-12, CA16-17, Dumfries and Galloway: DG14, Galashiels: TD9, Lancaster: LA8-10, LA21-23 and Newcastle upon Tyne: NE19, NE47-NE49

There is no maximum limit to the number of payments households can receive during the winter period. It is estimated that around 10,000 people will receive the payment. The twelve postcode areas in Cumbria to receive a payment include the Lakes, Kendal and Coniston, after freezing temperatures were recorded at the Shap weather centre. The payment was triggered on November 18.

You can check if you are due a payment in your area once the scheme reopens by looking up your postcode. If you've not received a Cold Weather Payment and you think you're eligible, contact the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus.

Cold Weather Payments are not available in Scotland anymore - but you might be entitled to an annual £50 Winter Heating Payment instead. You’ll usually get Cold Weather Payments if you get income-related ESA and are in a work-related activity group or support group. If you’re not in either group, you might also get Cold Weather Payments if you have any of the following: a severe or enhanced disability premium, a pensioner premium, a child who is disabled, Child Tax Credit that includes a disability or severe disability element or a child under 5 living with you.
