Statue Of Liberty Evacuated After Bomb Threat

The all-clear has been given after the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island were evacuated following a bomb threat.

The iconic attractions were emptied after a 911 caller threatened to blow up the statue, the National Park Service said in a statement.

United States Park Police swept the statue with two canine units and a dog picked up a scent in the visitors' locker area, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

NYPD's bomb squad was also called to the scene.

The police department's first precinct tweeted: "All clear on #LibertyIsland. A big thanks to the #NYPD #BombSquad."

It is not clear whether the 911 call was a hoax.

Photos posted on Twitter by visitors showed hundreds of people being herded toward a ferry landing.

"Waiting to be evacuated off #libertyisland. Interesting," Twitter user Rick Borgmeyer wrote.

Another photo showed the ferry landing void of visitors and security personnel standing nearby.

Members of the NYPD harbor team and the National Park Service were sweeping the attractions.

Park officials have not immediately responded to a request for comment.

Some four million people visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island each year, according to New York Harbor Parks' website.

The 151ft (46 metre) sculpture of a torch-bearing woman was a gift from France to the US, dedicated in 1886.
