'Stay Strong, Louisiana': Lieutenant Governor Surveys Ida Damage in Plaquemines Parish

Destruction and flooding from Hurricane Ida in Louisiana’s coastal Plaquemines Parish could be seen in footage posted by Lt Gov Billy Nungesser on August 30.

“I will do everything I can to help our people get back on their feet and in their homes,” Nungesser said on Facebook. “Stay strong, Louisiana.”

Speaking to PBS from Plaquemines Parish, Nungesser said “many miles” in the area remained underwater. “It looks like a war zone,” he said.

The hurricane was carrying winds of up 145 mph when it made landfall on Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm weakened into a tropical depression on Monday, bringing flooding rain to Mississippi, and was expected to bring dangerous weather to Tennessee later in the week. Credit: Billy Nungesser via Storyful
