Staying In Is The New Going Out For Three Quarters Of Brits On New Year’s Eve

What are you doing for New Year’s Eve? It’s the question on everyone’s lips as soon as Christmas is out of the way - and this year, Brits are planning on staying in.

Around three quarters (73%) of people questioned in a survey run by the Post Office said that they’re planning a ‘big night in’ rather than a big night out this year.

Some will be hosting and others are heading to the home of a friend or relative and, like most things on December 31st, it isn’t going to come cheap.

Those planning to host a dinner are expecting to spend £116 a head and even throwing a house party is expected to come in at a cost of more than £50 per guest.

The Post Office survey warns that there could be added costs to staying in based on the clean up afterwards. One in 10 party hosts surveyed said their home was damaged by a New Year party last year.

Meanwhile, party people heading out on the town reckon they’ll end up paying around £54 for a night at a pub, club or restaurant. That’s the national average, but 30 somethings plan to spend more (£84) while Londoners have the most generous budget (£110).

In Scotland, people plan to spend £50, while in Wales the average expected spend is £38 and in Northern Ireland it is £61.

But New Year celebrations don’t have to break the bank - 12% said they won’t spend any money at all on December 31st.
