Stellantis? What to call a merged Fiat-Peugeot

The Fiat and Peugeot groups have had a long, hard think about what to call themselves after they merge.

And they’ve got an answer.

Stellantis.

The name was revealed late Wednesday (July 15).

In case you’re wondering, the firms say it’s rooted in the Latin verb "stello", meaning to brighten with stars.

They say the “evocation of astronomy captures the true spirit of optimism, energy and renewal driving this industry-changing merger.”

The accompanying logo gets a sci-fi font to match the stellar imagery.

But the name will only be used for the new group.

It won’t replace Fiat or Peugeot on the back of any cars.

Public and industry reaction was mixed.

Many Twitter users compared the name to a medicine, urging people to check if Stellantis was right for them.

For others it brought to mind Atlantis, the legendary city that sank beneath the waves.

Fiat and Peugeot hope it's more like blasting off into a high-tech future.
