Steph McGovern has taken Boris Johnson to task for calling David Cameron a “girly swot” – telling him she is one too and joking about which one of them will keep their job the longest.

The BBC presenter took a swipe at the Prime Minister as she took the stage at the Convention of the North in Rotherham.

A video on the Daily Mirror’s website shows Johnson stepping down off the podium after giving a speech.

McGovern then walks on to the stage and invites the audience to give the politician a round of applause.

The presenter, who was acting as the compere at the event, then added: “I'd just like to point out I am a girly swot, and I'm proud of it!

“Let's see who's in the job the longest.”

The joke had the audience clapping and laughing, before McGovern moved on with the agenda.

The presenter’s jibe came after it was reported that Johnson had written on a private cabinet paper that former Conservative leader Cameron was a "girly swot”.

The paper was released during a legal challenge of the Prime Minister’s decision to suspend Parliament, but it had been partially redacted so not all the words were visible.

Earlier this month Sky News obtained an unredacted version, in which Johnson says: “The whole September session is a rigmarole introduced by girly swot Cameron and show the public that MPs are earning their crust.”

McGovern, 37, is a journalist and TV presenter who is best known for her work on BBC Breakfast.

She has also appeared on Have I Got News For You.

The TV star is currently expecting her first child with her girlfriend.
