BBC Breakfast was an emotional one this morning as presenter Steph McGovern returned to the sofa for the last time to say goodbye to the show.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as the 37-year-old ended her maternity leave with a visit to her old job before she fronts new health series, Easy Ways to Live Well and then moves to Channel 4 for her own talk show.

On going back to work as a new mum, Steph said: “Working on this programme definitely prepares you for the hours that you do. When she wakes me up at 3am, I'm kind of used to that.”

“But it's like you're living with a tiny dictator, everything you know in your life is ruled by this little creature,” she joked.

“Honestly, you think you look alright, and then the next minute you've got a bit of sick on you. But no she's fab and I'm really lucky. But I have a newfound respect for parents, definitely. I look at them now and go, wow, you look so together.”

Hosts Dan Walker and Louise Minchin then played highlights reel of Steph’s career and all of her best bits on the show over the years.

The presenter even welled up when reminiscing about her time on the red sofa.

“I totally didn’t expect to cry but there you are! It's been brilliant. I love the family here.,” she said.

“The team behind the scenes who work day and night to make us look good. We couldn’t do it without them.”

Fellow Breakfast presenters Carol Kirkwood and Sally Nugent joined the party and veteran host Bill Turnbull joined via video link who told Steph: “We always knew you’d have star quality.”

Understandably, viewers were getting emotional too, with several taking to Twitter to express how much they will miss seeing Steph on the show.

One fan wrote: “Gonna miss you Steph. Good luck for the future, you can do it.”

While another added: “Love Steph – a proper breath of fresh (Northern) air. Good luck, lass.”

Easy Ways to Live Well kicks off tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
