Stephen Colbert 'reveals' what world leaders were really thinking when they saw Trump in Paris

Stephen Colbert has attempted to get into the minds of several world leaders, to discover what they really think of Donald Trump's actions over the weekend.

Trump was widely criticised after he cancelled a visit to a First World War cemetery because of “poor weather”. The US president was supposed to lay a wreath at the Aisne-Marne American cemetery in Belleau, but the White House claimed that heavy rain prevented him from arriving via helicopter to the site around an hour’s drive away from the French capital, where he was meeting with Emmanuel Macron.

The host initially brought up French president Emmanuel Macron's public comments, in which he issued a hard-hitting speech warning of the dangers of nationalism and of countries that put their interests before the collective good – in front of both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

“Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism," he said. “In saying, ‘Our interests first, whatever happens to the others’, you erase the most precious thing a nation can have, that which makes it live, that which causes it to be great and that which is most important: its moral values.”

Colbert noted how many assumed the speech was about Trump, before commenting on Trump's reaction to meeting Putin in contrast with both Macron and German chancellor Angela Merkel's reactions. He attempted to interpret what they might be thinking in the photo.
