Stephen Fry And Husband To Quit UK For Hollywood As Comic’s Bafta Storm Rolls On

Under-fire Stephen Fry is relocating to America with his husband as the backlash continues over the comedian’s Bafta stint.

The 58-year-old – who shut his Twitter account after calling winner Jenny Beavan a “bag lady” on stage – will move to the States with husband Elliott Spencer.

Elliot, 28, has revealed they are in talks to buy a house and he plans to start work in the US.

He told today’s The Sun newspaper: “We’re moving to Los Angeles and I’m applying for a green card. We’re excited about having a new base.”

The news comes following the backlash the Englishman received on Twitter after his stint as BAFTA host on Sunday, with objection to his jibe at Jenny as she collected her award for Costume Design for her work on Mad Max: Fury Road.

Stephen went on to the social networking site to inform the irate web mob that he and Jenny, 66, are old friends and she was in on the joke.

After his explanation fell on deaf ears he quit the social networking site.

Then yesterday in a lengthy blog post he explained why he decided to quit and insisted he hadn’t thrown his “toys out of the pram” and lamented over the loss of ‘fun’ on Twitter, on which he had 12 million followers.

In one post he quickly deleted, he wrote: ‘Will all you sanctimonious f***** f*** the f*** off Jenny Beavan is a friend and joshing is legitimate.’

He then used a quote made famous by civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr: “I am free, free at last.”

In October, Stephen left BBC2 quiz show QI after 13 years and last month he also stepped down as a director of Premier League Norwich.

Stephen has credited Elliott, who he married in 2012, with rescuing him after his public battle with depression that resulted in a suicide bid in 2012.

Now watch Stephen warning we must be tasteful and classy at award ceremonies:
